Distance Learning
Distance Learning – Easier than traditional learning? Do not believe the hype!
There is a misconception that distance learning is much easier than traditional learning. This might stem from the fact that distance learning allows for a schedule that is more flexible than that of the traditional learning system. Also, you do not have a teacher who can literally stand over your shoulder and check your work. This is not to say hat ‘virtual teachers’ won’t push you, but there is something about seeing a teacher or lecturer in person that intimidates you (Morgan State Alum who took BUAD 699 know what I am saying). For these reasons and others, distance learning is viewed as being much easier.
Whatever distance learning offers in convenience, it takes away in extra discipline that is needed. Since there is no teacher or lecturer to boss you around, you need to find extra motivation by yourself. You might be able to talk to your lecturer via email, IM or phone, but it does not compensate for being able to speak to someone in person. However, if you can find the will and the discipline, distance learning offers quality education just like traditional learning.
There are 3 ways to go about distance learning:
- Instructor Led: This is where an instructor actually teaches the class. The instructor might post lessons and be available for questions. Also, the instructor might have weekly online class meeting through some sort of IM or online meeting software. The instructor also reviews homework, assignments, etc. and assigns a grade and/or issues a certificate of completion. There is a set start and end date for the class.
- Independent: The lesson might be posted on a board and students gain access to the material and complete everything for themselves. Ther might or might not be a board/forum for posting questions. All study activity is left for the studet to do. There might be online quizzes and exams – but it is all automated. There is no start and/or end date for the class.
- Hybrid: There are classes that offer a hybrid of both formats. Where lessons are posted online and the student reads at their own pace, but can email an instructor for help. There might or might not be a clear start and end date for the class/course.
It is left for you to decide which format is best for you.
